In 1914, a Russian peasant moves from the country to the city (St. Petersburg) where he finds work helping the industrial magnates break factory strikes. Nonetheless, while experience the subpar living conditions of the working class, he realizes that it would be more just to be a revolutionary and therefore to lead a strike, which he does. Shostakovich’s score is the most original and colorful he ever made. In the subsequent suite for orchestra, he did not shy.
Away from that originality, almost mock-heroic: he added the coda of his Third Symphony for a grandiloquent effect in the Finale; the orchestral textures are varied as evidenced by the forces: an organ, two harps, a celesta, and… lo and behold… a Hawaiian guitar! Yes, Shostakovich did write music for a Hawaiian guitar! The 3rd movement of the suite, a fugue, highlights the power of the organ accompanied by the orchestra. In the 2nd movement, the waltz, the dialogue between instruments does not want for coquetry, albeit quite kitsch and cartoonish when it comes to the Hawaiian guitar (before this excerpt). Shostakovich would repeat the experience 3 years later in.
